Selena Deer, Playwright
Selena Rose Deer is an Actor, Poet, Playwright, Singer-Songwriter, Teaching Artist, and Musical Bookwriter. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Selena is of Jamaican, Sicilian, and Irish heritage and identifies as a proud Black Woman. Selena holds a BA in Communication (Mass Media) and Theatre (Performance) from UW-Green Bay.
A classically trained actor from the age of eight through First Stage Children’s Theater in Milwaukee, Selena began the pursuit of playwriting, as there are few written roles specifically for her race and gender in mainstream plays. Selena’s artistic works generate empathy and are calls to action, often written in terms of escapism.
In addition, Selena is an active Spoken Word Poet, ranked 13th nationally (Women of the World Poetry Slam 2023).
She hopes to use her platform and any success she achieves in this life to give back and support young artists, help them receive the training they need and create a more equitable path in the entertainment industry. She seeks to inspire specifically BIPOC to embrace fully who they are, represent them in her work to the best of her abilities—uplift and amplify the voices that have been silenced, histories that have been ignored, and organize communities to fight for recognition and effective change.
Selena currently lives in Brooklyn, New York where she continues to write and perform. She is a BMI Lehman Engel trained Musical Theatre Workshop Bookwriter and is currently working on a jukebox musical for the Grammy Award-winning band Alabama Shakes.
Plays Include:
ASSASSIN’S ANTHOLOGY, with performances at the University of Green Bay (2018) and Staged Reading in the Sunstone Studios New Works Festival (2022)

THE HIVE, a new unpublished Dystopian thriller.
